Only Catholics who are not conscious of serious sin on their souls should receive Holy Communion.

Communicants receive The Eucharist kneeling and on the tongue.

 

THE PRIEST’S SERMON

The Priest, Father Brendan Arthur, enters the church. The bride enters. The Priest then ascends to the pulpit to give a short sermon.

He then moves to the sanctuary to administer the marriage sacrament and celebrate the first Mass of the wedded couple.

 

THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY

The Priest stands facing the bridegroom and bride.

First he asks the bridegroom:

Pr. OOOO, wilt thou take Xxxxxxx, here present, for thy lawful wife, according to the right of our holy Mother the Church?

Response: I will.

Then the Priest asks the bride:

Pr. Xxxxxxx, wilt thou take OOOO, here present, for thy lawful husband, according to the right of our holy Mother the Church?

R. I will.

Having obtained their mutual consent, the Priest bids the man and the woman join their right hands. Then they pledge themselves each to the other as follows, repeating the words after the Priest.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

Xxxxxxx and OOOOconsecrate their marriage to the Blessed Virgin.

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, and tender Mother of men; in accordance with thine ardent wish made known at Fatima, we wish to consecrate to thee our newly begun wedded life together.

Reign over us dearest Mother that we may be thine in prosperity and in adversity, in joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness, in life and in death.

O most compassionate Heart of Mary, Queen of Virgins, watch over our minds and hearts and preserve them from the deluge of impurity which thou didst lament so sorrowfully at Fatima. We want to be pure like thee. We want to atone for the many crimes committed against Jesus and thee. We want to call down upon our country and the whole human race, the peace of God in justice and charity.

Therefore we now promise to imitate thy virtues by the practice of a Christian life in our family without regard to human respect.

We resolve to receive Holy Communion regularly and to offer thee five decades of the Rosary daily as far as we can, together with our sacrifices in the spirit of reparation and penance, for the good of our souls, for the re-building of our Holy Mother the Church, and for the greater glory of God. Amen.

 

With the wedding ceremony now completed, Xxxxxxx and Ooooooo, as husband and wife, leave the church.

STAND

 

Please do not throw confetti or rice in the church, hall or entrance ways.

I, OOOO, take thee, Xxxxxxx , for my lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part.

I, Xxxxxxx , take thee, OOOO, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part.

Their hands being still joined, the Priest says:

EGO conjungo vos in matrimonium, in nomine Patris, Ì et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen

I join you together in marriage, in the name of the Father, Ì and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

He then sprinkles them with holy water. This done, he blesses the rings, saying:

Then the Priest sprinkles the rings with holy water in the form of a cross. The bridegroom, having received the bride’s ring from the hand of the Priest, places it on the third finger of the left hand of the bride, repeating the words after the Priest.

With this ring I thee wed and I plight unto thee my troth.

(Likewise, the bride may receive the bridegroom’s ring from the Priest, placing it on the third finger of the left hand of the bridegroom, repeating the words after the Priest.

The Last Gospel

The Priest goes to the Gospel side of the altar and reads the beginning of the Gospel according to Saint John. The Server and the faithful stand and sign themselves, like the Priest, on the forehead, lips and breast.

The Second Nuptial Blessing

KNEEL

The Priest turns toward the bridegroom and bride saying a final prayer for wedded happiness:

DEUS Abraham, Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob sit vobiscum: et ipse adimpleat benedictionem suam in vobis: ut videatis folios filiorum mvestrorum musque ad tertiam met quartamm generationem et postea vitamm aeternam habeatism sene fine: madjuvante Domino nostro Jesu Christo, qui cum Patre et Spiritu sancto vivit et regnat Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum.

R. Amen.

MAY the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob be with you: and Himself fulfil His blessing on you: that you mat see your children’s children even to the third and fourth generation: and thereafter possess life everlasting, by the aid of our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

R. Amen.

Lastly he sprinkles them with holy water.

 

The Final Blessing

Bowing down before the Altar, with hands joined upon it, the Priest says:

PLACEAT tibi, sancta Trinitas, obsequium servitutis meae: et praesta, ut sacrificium quod oculis tuae majestatis indignus obtuli, tibi sit acceptabile, mihique, et omnibus proquibus illud obtuli, sit te miserante propitiabile. Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

Amen.

MAY the performance of my homage be pleasing to Thee, most Holy Trinity: and grant that the Sacrifice which I, though unworthy, have offered up in the sight of Thy Majesty, may be acceptable to Thee, and through Thy mercy, be a propitiation for me and for all whom I have offered it. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

 

The Priest kisses the altar and gives the faithful his blessing. The faithful make the sign of the cross:

Prayers at the Foot of the Altar

KNEEL

Standing at the foot of the altar, the Priest makes the sign of the cross, saying:

Whilst the Priest and Server recite the following prayers, the Schola chant the Introit (see Introit on Page 7)

Bowing down, the Priest makes his confession to prepare himself to celebrate the Sacrifice. His prayer is answered by the server:

The server then moves the Missal to the Epistle side of the altar and then assists the Priest in covering the sacred vessels used for the communion.

 

The Communion and Postcommunion Prayers

The Priest moves to the Missal to read the Communion prayer, while the Schola chant:

Ecce sic beneicetur omnis homo, qui timet Dominum: et videas filios filiorum tuorum: pax super Israel.

Behold, thus shall every man be blessed that fearesth the Lord; and mayest thou see thy children’s children; peace upon Israel.

Returning to the centre of the altar the Priest says:

Pr. Dominus vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Pr. The Lord be with you

R. And with thy spirit.

The Priest again moves to the Missal and reads the Postcommunion prayer:

QUAESUMUS ommnipotens Deus, institute providentiae tuae pio favour comitare: ut, quos legitima societate connectis, longtaeva pace custodias. Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum, Filium tuum: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia seacula seaculorum.

WE beseech Thee, almighty God, to accompany with Thy gracious favour, the institution of Thy Providence, and keep in lasting peace those whom Thou dost join in lawful union. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

Pr. Per omnia saecula saeculorum.

R. Amen.

Pr. World without end.

R. Amen.

The Priest then moves to the middle of the altar, kisses it and says:

Pr. Dominus vobiscum.

He then sings:

The faithful respond singing:

The Communion of the Faithful

After genuflecting, the Priest turns to the faithful and holds up one of the Hosts saying:

ECCE Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi.

BEHOLD the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world.

The Priest says the following prayer three times; the faithful strike their breast each time:

DOMINE, non sum dignus, ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea.

LORD, I am not worthy that Thou should enter under my roof; say but the word and my soul shall be healed.

The faithful come to the altar rail and the Priest administers Holy Communion to each person with the words:

Ì CORPUS Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

Ì THE Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto everlasting life. Amen.

The Ablutions

After the communion of the faithful, the server pours wine into the Chalice at the centre of the altar, as the Priest says:

QUOD ore sumpisimus, Domine, pura mente capiamus, et de munere temporali fiat nobis remedium sempiternum.

 

GRANT, O Lord, that what we have taken with our mouth, we may receive with a pure mind; and from a temporal gift may it become to us an eternal remedy.

With the Priest moving to the Epistle side of the altar, the server pours water and wine over the fingers of the Priest, into the chalice. The Priest dries his fingers with the purificator cloth, and says, silently:

CORPUS tuum, Domine, quod sumpsi, et Sanguis, quem potavi, adhaereat visceribus meis: et praesta; ut in me non remaneat scelerum macula, quem pura et sancta refecerunt Sacramenta. Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum.

Amen.

MAY Thy Body, O Lord, which I have received, and Thy Blood which I have drunk, cling to my inmost being; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me, who has been fed with this pure and holy Sacrament; Who live reign, world without end. Amen.

Pr. MISEREATUR vestri omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis vestris, perducat vos ad vitam aeternam.

Pr. ALMIGHTY God have mercy on you, and forgiving you your sins, bring you to life everlasting.

Ascent to the Altar

STAND

The Priest extends and then joins his hands while saying "OREMUS" (Let Us Pray) and then ascends to the altar saying the following prayer in silence:

Oremus.

AUFER a nobis, quaesumus Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta Sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Let us pray.

TAKE away from us our iniquities, we beseech Thee, O Lord; that being made pure in heart we may be worthy to enter into the Holy of Holies. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ORAMUS te, Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum, (Osculatur Altare in medio) quorum reliquiae hic sunt et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen.

WE beseech Thee, O Lord, by the merits of Thy Saints (He kisses the altar in the centre) whose relics lie here, and of all the Saints: that Thou would vouchsafe to pardon me all my sins. Amen.

The Priest places incense into the thurible and pronounces the following blessing:

AB illo Ì benedicaris, in cujus honore cremaberis. Amen.

BE thou Ì blessed by Him in Whose honour thou shalt be burned. Amen.

The Priest then incenses the Blessed Sacrament, the relics of the saints and then the entire altar. He returns the thurible to the server who then incenses the Priest.

The organ is played during the incensing and the choir and faithful sing the Kyrie Eleison (see below):

 

Introit Prayer

The Priest goes to the Missal on the right side of the altar and, making the sign of the cross, reads the Introit prayer:

DEUS Israel conjungat vos: et ipse sit vobiscum, qui misertus est duobus unicis: et nunc, Domine, fac eos plenius benedicere te. Beati omnes qui timent Dominum: qui ambulant in viis ejus. Gloria Patri et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. The Confession before Communion

Whilst the Priest completes his communion the server, on behalf of the faithful, says the Confiteor in preparation for communion:

LET not the partaking of Thy Body, Lord Jesus Christ, which I, though unworthy, presume to receive, turn to my judgment and condemnation; but through Thy Goodness, let it become a safeguard and an effective remedy, both for soul and body; Who with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, live and reign God, world without end. The Priest's Communion

PANEM caelestem accipiam, et nomen Domini invocabo.

I WILL take the Bread of heaven, and will call upon the Name of the Lord.

The Priest repeats the following prayer, saying the first four words "Domine, non sum dignus" aloud, while striking his breast three times. The server rings the bells at each utterance:

LORD, I am not worthy that Thou should enter under my roof; say but the word and my soul shall be healed.

THE Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul unto life everlasting. Amen.

The Priest consumes the Sacred Host and then says the following prayer with profound adoration:

QUID retribuam Domino pro omnibus quae retribuit mihi? Calicem salutaris accipiam, et nomen Domini invoacbo. Laudans invocabo Dominum, et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.

WHAT return shall I render unto the Lord for all He has given me? I will take the chalice of salvation, and I will call upon the Name of the Lord. Praising I will call upon the Lord, and I shall be saved from all my enemies.

"Gloria In Excelsis"

The Priest begins to sing the Gloria In Excelsis, with the choir and the faithful joining in:

The Collect Prayer

The Priest kisses the centre of the altar, and then turns to greet the people by singing:

The Priest moves to the Missal at the right side of the altar and chants the Collect Prayer:

The Epistle

The Priest chants the Epistle:

Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians.

BRETHREN: Let women be subject to their husbands as to the Lord; for the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the Church. He is the saviour of His body. Therefore, as the Church is subject to Christ, so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the Church, and delivered Himself up for it: that He might sanctify it, cleansing it by the laver of water in the word of life; that He might present it to Himself a glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. So also ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself: for no man ever hated his own flesh, but nouriseth and cherisheth it; as also Christ doth the Church: for we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall be two in one flesh. This is a great Sacrament, but I speak in Christ and in the Church. Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular love his wife as himself, and let the wife fear her husband.

The "Agnus Dei"

Striking his breast three times, the Priest recites the following prayer, whilst the choir and faithful sing:

AGNUS Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem.

LAMB of God, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Prayers in Preparation for Communion

Whilst the choir and faithful sing, the Priest continues:

O LORD Jesus Christ, Who has said to Thine Apostles: Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; regard not my sins, but the faith of Thy Church, and vouchsafe to grant her peace and unity according to Thy Will: Who lives and reigns God, world without end.

The Breaking of the Host

The Priest then returns to the centre of the altar, turns toward it and says silently:

LIBERA nos, quaesumus, Domine, ab omnibus malis, praeteritis, praesentibus, et futuris: et intercedente beata et gloriosa semper Virgine Dei Genitrice Maria, cum beatis Apostolis tuis Petro et Paulo, atque Andrea, et omnibus Sanctis, da propitius pacem in diebus nostris: ut ope misericordiae tuae adjuti, et a peccato simus semper liberi, et ab omni perturbatione securi.

DELIVER us, we beg Thee, O Lord, from every evil, past, present, and to come; and by the intercession of the Blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and of the holy Apostles, Peter and Paul, and of Andrew, and of all the Saints, mercifully grant peace in our days, that through the assistance of Thy mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all disturbance.

Breaking the Host in half and then breaking off a small particle the Priest continues:

PER eundem Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum Filium tuum. Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus,

THROUGH the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God,

With raised voice, the Priest continues:

The Priest makes the sign of the cross, holding the particle of the Host, over the Chalice three times, saying:

THE PEACE Ì of the Lord be Ì always with Ì you.

R. And also with you.

The Priest places the particle of the Host into the Chalice while saying:

HAEC commixtio et consecratio Corporis et Sanguinis Domini nostri Jesu Christi, fiat accipientibus nobis in vitam aeternam. Amen.

MAY this mingling and consecration of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ be to us who receive it effectual unto eternal life. Amen.

The Gradual and Alleluia

The Priest reads the Gradual and Alleluia, whilst it is chanted by the Schola:

UXOR tua sicut vitis abundans in lateribus domus tuae. Filii tui sicut novellae olivarum in circuitu mensae tuae.

Alleluia, alleluia. Mittat vobis Dominus auxilium de sancto : et de Sion tueatur vos. Alleluia

THIS wife shall be as a fruitful vine on the sides of the house. Thy children as olive plants round about thy table. Alleluia, alleluia. May the Lord send you

Alleluia, alleluia. May the Lord send you aid from His holy place and watch over you from Sion. Alleluia.

 

Preparation for the Gospel

The Priest blesses the incense while the Server moves the Missal from the right side to the left side of the altar. Bowing deeply, he prepares himself for reading the Gospel by reciting the following prayer:

MUNDA cor meum ac labia mea, omnipotens Deus, qui labia Isaiae Prophetae calculo mundasti ignito: ita me tua grata miseratione dignare mundare, ut sanctum Evangelium tuum digne valeam nuntiare. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

CLEANSE my heart and my lips, O Almighty God, Who cleansed the lips of the Prophet Isaiah with a burning coal. In Thy gracious mercy deign so to purify me that I may worthily proclaim Thy holy Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Priest asks for a blessing:

JUBE, Domini), benedicere.

DOMINUS sit in corde meo et in labiis meis : ut digne et competenter annuntiem Evangelium suum.

PRAY, Lord, a blessing.

MAY the Lord be in my heart and on my lips that I may worthily and fittingly proclaim His holy Gospel.

 

The Gospel

STAND

The Priest goes to the Gospel (left) side to chant the Gospel, which begins with a greeting:

Pr. DOMINUS vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Pr. THE Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

The Server and the faithful stand and sign themselves, like the Priest, on the forehead, lips and breast.

Pr. SEQUENTIA sancti Ì Evangelii secundum Mathaeum.

R. Gloria tibi, Domine.

Pr. THE continuation Ì of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

The Priest incenses the book before chanting the Gospel.

IN illo tempore: Accesserunt ad Jesum pharisaei tenantes eum, et dicentes : Si licet homini dimittere uxorem suam, quacumque ex causa? Qui respondens, ait eis : Non legistis, quia qui fecit hominem ab initio, masculum et feminam fecit eos? et dixit : Propter hoc dimittet homo patrem, et matrem, et adhaerebit uxori suae, et erunt duo in carne una. Itaque jam non sunt duo, sed una caro. Quod ergo Deus conjunxit, homo non separet.

AT that time: The Pharisees came to Jesus, tempting Him and saying; Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? Who answering said to them: Have ye not read, that He who made man from the beginning, made them male and female? And He said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two but one flesh. What, therefore, God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.

At the end of the Gospel the server responds:

The Priest kisses the Missal and says:

PER evangelica dicta deleantur nostra delicta.

BY the words of the Gospel may our sins be blotted out.

The Priest is then incensed by the server.

The Priest then prays for God’s blessing upon the bride that she may "follow always the saintly models of her gender":

O God, who by Thine own mighty power, didst make all things out of nothing: who, having set in order the beginnings of the world, didst appoint Woman to be an inseparable helpmate to Man, made like unto God, so that Thou didst give to woman’s body its beginnings in man’s flesh, thereby teaching that what it pleased Thee to form from one substance, might never be lawfully separated: O God, who, by so excellent a mystery hast consecrated the union of man and wife, as to foreshadow in this nuptial bond the union of Christ with His church: O God, by Whom Woman is joined to Man, and the partnership, ordained from the beginning, is endowed with such blessing that it alone was not withdrawn either by the punishment of original sin, nor by the sentence of the flood: graciously look upon Thy handmaid, who, about to be joined in wedlock, seeks Thy defence and protection. May it be to her a yoke of love and peace: faithful and chaste, may she be wedded in Christ, and let her ever be the imitator of holy women: let her be dear to her husband, like Rachel: wise, like Rebecca: long-lived and faithful, like Sara. Let not the author of deceit work any of his evil deeds in her. May she continue, clinging to the faith and to the commandments. Bound in one union, let her shun all unlawful contact. Let her protect her weakness by the strength of discipline; let her be grave in behaviour, respected for modesty, well-instructed in heavenly doctrine. Let her be fruitful in offspring; be approved and innocent; and come to the repose of the blessed kingdom of heaven. May they both see their children’s children to the third …

Breaking the silence of the Canon, the Priest says:

PATER noster, qui es in coelis: sanctificetur nomen tuum: adveniat regnum tuum: fiat voluntas tua, sicut in coelo, et in terra. Panem nostrum quotibianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem:

The First Nuptial Blessing

The Priest moves to the Epistle side of the altar and turns toward the bridegroom and bride. They kneel before the altar and he blesses them by asking God to be the unfailing protector of their union:

supplicationibus nostris, et institutis tuis, quibus propagationem humani generis ondinasti, benignus assiste : ut quod to auctore jungitur, te auxiliante servetur. Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum, Filium tuum: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia seacula seaculorum.

 

Let us pray.

BE gracious, O Lord, to our humble supplications: and graciously assist this Thine institution, which Thou hast established for the increase of mankind: that what is joined together by Thine authority, may be preserved by Thine aid. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

The Offertory

The Priest moves to the centre of the altar, kisses it and turns to the people:

The Priest reads, whilst the Schola chant the Offertory Verse:

Offering of the Host

The Priest raises the Host on the paten to the level of his eyes and says the following prayer:

SUSCIPE, sancte Pater, omnipotens aeterne Deus, hanc immaculatam hostiam, quam ego indignus famulus tuus offero tibi, Deo meo vivo et vero, pro innumerabilibus peccatis, et offensionibus, et negligentiis meis, et pro omnibus circumstantibus, sed et pro omnibus fidelibus christianis vivis atque defunctis: ut mihi, et illis proficiat ad salutem in vitam aeternam. Amen.

ACCEPT, O Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host, which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, to atone for my innumerable sins, offenses, and negligences, and for all here present; also for all faithful Christians both living and dead, that it may profit me and them for salvation unto life everlasting.

Amen.

The Priest returns the Host to the altar, and making the sign of the cross with it as he places it on the corporal.

The Servers bring the Priest the wine and the water. The Priest pours wine into the chalice. The Priest then pronounces the following prayer, making the sign of the cross over the cruet containing water. The Priest then pours a small amount of water into the chalice:

DEUS, Ì qui humanae substantiae dignitatem mirabiliter condidisti, et mirabilius reformasti: da nobis per hujus aquae et vini mysterium, ejusdivinitatis esse consortes, qui humanitatis nostrae fieri dignatus est particeps, Jesus Christus Filius tuus Dominus noster:

O GOD, Ì Who, in creating human nature, did wonderfully dignify it, and still more wonderfully restored it, grant that by the Mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of His divine nature, Who vouchsafed to be made partaker of our human nature, even Jesus Christ, our Lord, Thy Son:

Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen

Who with Thee, lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God: world without end. Amen.

 

Offering of the Chalice

Returning to the Centre of the Altar, the Priest raises the chalice to the level of his eyes and says the following prayer:

OFFERIMUS tibi, Domine, calicem salutaris tuam deprecantes clementiam: ut in conspectu divinae majestatis tuae, pro nostra et totius mundi salute com odore suavitatis ascendat. Amen.

WE offer Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet fragrance, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.

The Priest, returning the chalice to the altar, makes the sign of the cross with it as he places it on the corporal and covers it with the pall.

The Priest and the faithful make an offering of themselves to God in sacrifice. With his hands joined upon the altar, the Priest bows slightly as he says the following prayer:

IN spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine, et sic fiat sacrificum nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

 

ACCEPT us, O Lord, in our spirit of humility and contrition of heart, and grant that the sacrifice, which we offer this day in Thy sight may be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God.

Standing upright again he blesses the bread and wine:

VENI, Sanctificator omnipotens aeterne Deus: et benedic Ì hoc sacrificum tuo sancto nomini praeparatum.

 

COME, O Sanctifier, Almighty and Eternal God, and bless Ì this sacrifice prepared for the glory of Thy holy Name.

 

Incensing of the Offerings

The Priest then blesses the incense while the choir sings:

PER intercessionem beati Michaelis Archangeli, stantis a dextris altaris incensi, et omnium electorum suorum, incensum istud dignetur Dominus Ì benedicere, et in odorem suavitatis accipere. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

THROUGH the intercession of the blessed Michael the Archangel standing at the right hand of the altar of incense, and of all His elect, may the Lord vouchsafe to bless Ì this incense and to receive it in the odour of sweetness. Through Christ or Lord. Amen.

Commemoration of the Dead

MEMENTO, Domine, famulorum famularumque tuarum N. et N., qui nos praecesserunt cum signo fidei, et dormiunt in somno pacis. Ipsis, Domine, et omnibus in Christo quiescentibus, locum refrigerii, lucis et pacis, ut indulgeas , deprecamur. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum.

Amen.

REMEMBER also, Lord, Your servants and handmaids N. and N., who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace. To these, O Lord, and to all who rest in Christ, we beg Thee to grant of Thy Goodness a place of comfort, light, and peace. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Raising his voice slightly at the words "Nobis quoque peccatoribus" and striking his breast with his right hand the Priest says:

NOBIS quoque peccatoribus famulis tuis, de multitudine miserationum tuarum sperantibus, partem aliquam, et societatem donare digneris, cum tuis sanctis Apostolis et Martyribus: cum Joanne, Stephano, Matthia, Barnaba, Ignatio, Alexandro, Marcellino, Petro, Felicitate, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnete, Caecilia, Anastasis, et omnibus Sanctis tuis: intra quorum nos consortium, non aestimator meritim sed veniae, quaesumus, largitor admitte. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Per quem haec omnia Domine, semper bona creas, Ì sanctificas, Ì vivificas, Ì benedicis, et praestas nobis.

TO us also, Thy sinful servants, confiding in the multitude of Thy mercy, vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with Thy Holy Apostles and Martyrs, with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all Thy Saints, into whose company we beseech Thee to admit us, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences. Through Christ our Lord. By Whom, O Lord, Thou always create, sanctify, Ì fill with life, Ì bless Ì and bestow upon us all good things.

 

Minor Elevation

As the Priest finishes the Canon, he uncovers the Chalice, genuflects, lifts the Host and the Chalice slightly and makes the sign of the cross with the Host over the Chalice, saying:

PER Ì ipsum, et cum Ì ipso, et in Ì ipso, est tibi Deo Patri Ì omnipotenti, in unitate Spiritus Ì Sancti, omnis honor et gloria.

THROUGH Ì Him, and with Ì Him, and in Ì Him, is to Thee, God the Father Ì Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ì Ghost, all honour and glory.

The Priest continues:

UNDE et memores, Domine, nos servi tui, sed et plebs tua sancta, ejusdem Christi Filii tui Domini nostri tam beatae Passionis, nec non et ab inferis Resurrectionis, sed et in coelos gloriosae Ascensionis: offerimus praeclarae majertati tuae de tuis donis ac datis hostiam Ì puram, hostiam Ì sanctam, hostiam Ì immaculatam, Panem Ì sanctum vitae aeternae, et Calicem Ì salutis perpetuae.

 

MINDFUL, therefore, Lord, we, Thy servants, as also Thy holy people, of the same Christ, Your Son, our Lord, remember His blessed Passion, and also of His Resurrection from the dead, and finally of His glorious Ascension into heaven, offer unto Thy most excellent Majesty of Thine Own gifts, bestowed upon us, a pure Host, Ì a holy Host, Ì an unspotted Host, Ì the holy Bread Ì of eternal life and the Chalice Ì of everlasting salvation.

SUPRA quae propitio ac sereno vultu respicere digneris; et accepta habere, sicut i accepta habere dignatus es munera pueri tui justi Abel, et sacrificium patriarchae nostri Abrahae, et quod tibi obtulit summus sacerdos tuus Melchisedech, sanctum sacrificium, immaculatam hostiam.

DEIGN to regard with gracious and serene countenance, and to accept them, as Thou was graciously pleased to accept the gifts of Thy just servant, Able, and the sacrifice of Abraham our Patriarch, and that which Thy chief priest Melchisedech offered to Thee, a holy Sacrifice, an unspotted Victim.

Bowing down profoundly, with his hands joined and placed upon the altar, he says:

SUPPLICES te rogamus, omnipotens Deus, jube haec perferri per manus sancti Angeli tui in sublime altare tuum, in conspectu dininae majertatis tuae: ut quoquot (osculatur altare) ex hac altaris participatione, sacrocanctum Filii tui Ì Corpus, et Sanguinem Ì sumpserimus, omni benedictione coelesti et gratia repleamur. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

MOST humbly we beseech Thee, Almighty God, command these offerings to be borne by the hands of Thy holy Angels to Thine altar on high, in the sight of Thy divine Majesty, that as many (He kisses the altar) as shall partake of the most holy Body Ì and Blood Ì of Thy Son at this altar, may be filled with every heavenly grace and blessing. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Priest incenses the Host and chalice in the form of a cross three times and then passes the thurible around them three times in an encircling movement:

INCENSUM istud a te benedictum, ascendat ad te, Domine: et descendat super nos misericordia tua.

MAY this incense, which Thou hast blessed, O Lord, ascend to Thee, and may Thy mercy descend upon us.

The Priest incenses the crucifix and altar saying:

DIRIGATUR, Domine, oratio mea, sicut incensum, in conspectu tuo: elevatio manuum mearum sacrificium vespertinum. Pone, Domine, custodiam ori meo, et ostium circumstantiae labiis meis: ut non declinet cor meum in verbo malitiae, ad excusandas excusationes in peccatis.

LET my prayer, O Lord, be directed as incense in Thy sight: the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, and a door round about my lips: That my heart may not incline to evil words, and seek excuses in sins.

Handing the thurible back to the Server he says:

ACCENDAT in nobis Dominus ignem sui amoris, et flammam aeternae caritatis. Amen.

MAY the Lord kindle within us the fire of His love, and the flame of everlasting charity. Amen.

The Priest is incensed, and after him the servers, according to their rank, and finally the faithful. A bow is made before and after each incensing.

The Washing of the Hands

During the incensing, the Priest moves to the left-hand side of the altar and a server pours water over his fingers as the Priest says the following words:

LAVABO inter innocentes manus meas: et circumdabo altare tuum, Domine: Ut audiam vocem laudis: et enarrem universa mirabila tua. Domine, dilexi decorem domus tuae: et locum habitationis gloriae tuae. Ne perdas cum impiis, Deus animam meam: et cum viris sanguinum vitam meam: in quorum manibus iniquitates sunt: dextera eorum repleta est muneribus. Ego autem in innocentia mea ingressus sum: redime me, et miserere mei. Pes meus stetit in directo: in ecclesiis benedicam te, Domine..

I WILL wash my hands among the innocent, and I will go around Thine altar, O Lord, that I may hear the voice of praise: and tell of all Thy wondrous deeds. I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of Thy house and the place where dwells Thy glory. Take not my soul, O God, with the wicked, nor my life with bloodthirsty men. In whose hands are iniquities, their right hand is full of gifts. But I have walked in my innocence: redeem me, and have mercy on me. My foot stands on level ground; in the churches I will bless Thee, O Lord.

GLORIA Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum.

Amen

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Returning to the middle of the altar and bowing low the Priest says:

SUSCIPE sancta Trinitas, hanc oblationem, quam tibi offerimus ob memoriam passionis, resurrectionis, et ascensionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri: et in monorem beatae Mariae semper Virginis, et beati Joannis Baptistae, et sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli, et monium Sanctorum: ut illis proficiat ad honorem, nobis autem ad salutem: et illi pro nobis interceder e dignentur in coelis, quorum memoriam agimus in terris. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

RECEIVE, most Holy Trinity, this oblation which we are making to Thee in remembrance of the Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and in honor of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Blessed John the Baptist, the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints; that it may avail unto their honor and our salvation, and may they vouchsafe to intercede in heaven for us who honor their memory here on earth. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

 

"Orate Fratres"

The Priest kisses the altar and turns towards the faithful and in an audible tone says:

Pr. ORATE fratres, ut meum ac vestrum sacrificium acceptabile fiat apud Deum Patrem omnipotentem.

S. Suscipiat Dominus sacrificium de manibus tuis ad laudem et gloriam nominis sui, ad utilitatem quoque nostram, totiusque Ecclesiae suae sanctae.

Pr. Amen.

Pr. PRAY brethren, that my Sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty.

S. The Lord receive the Sacrifice from your hands, to the praise and glory of His Name, to our benefit, and that of all His holy Church.

Pr. Amen.

 

The Secret Prayer

With his back to the faithful, the Priest reads the "Secret Prayer" in a low voice:

SUSCIPE, quaesumus, Domine, pro sacra connubuii lege munus oblatum : et cujus largitor es operas, esto dispositor.

ACCEPT, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the gifts offered for the sacred law of marriage: and do Thou dispose according to Thy will, that which is instituted by Thy bounty.

 

 

 

The Consecration of the Chalice

The Priest uncovers the chalice containing the wine, and taking it into his hands continues:

SIMILI modo postquam coenatum est, accipiens et hunc praeclarum Calicem in sanctas ac venerabiles manus suas: item tibi gratias agens, Ì benedixit, deditque discipulis suis, dicens: Accipite, et bibite ex eo omnes.

IN like manner, after He had supped, taking also this excellent chalice into His holy and venerable hands, and giving thanks to Thee, He Ì blessed it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and drink ye all of this.

 

Hic est enim Calix Sanguinis mei, novi et aeterni testamenti: mysterium fidei: qui pro vobis et pro multis effundetur in remissionem peccatorum.

 

For this is the Chalice of my Blood of the new and everlasting testament: the mystery of faith: which for you and for many will be shed unto the remission of sins.

 

HAEC quotiescumque feceritis, in mei memoriam facietis.

AS often as you shall do these things, do them in memory of Me.

 

The Priest genuflects to adore the Precious Blood; then reverently lifting up the Chalice, he shows It to the people that they, in their turn, may adore.

The Consecration of the Host

The Priest re-enacts the Last Supper. The bread and wine are about to be changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ by the almighty words of Christ spoken by the Priest. The Priest now takes the Host in his hands, saying:

QUI pridie quam pateretur, accepit panem in sanctas ac venerabiles manus suas, et elevatis oculis in coelum ad te Deum Patrem suum omnipotentem, tibi gratias agens, Ì benedixit, fregit, deditque discipulis suis, dicens: Accipite, et manducate ex hoc omnes.

WHO, the day before He suffered, took bread into His holy and venerable hands, and having raised His eyes to heaven, to Thee, God, His Almighty Father, giving thanks to Thee, blessed Ì it, broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take and eat ye all of this.

Through whom the angels praise Thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe. The heavens, and the heavenly hosts, and the blessed seraphim join together in celebrating their joy. With whom we pray Thee join our voices also, while we say with lowly praise …

THE CANON OF THE MASS

Prayers before the Consecration

Whilst the choir and the faithful sing, the Priest elevates and joins his hands, looks towards Heaven, bows profoundly towards the altar and with hands extended begins the Canon (or rule of consecration) of the Mass. The Canon is said in a silent tone, audible only to the Priest himself, out of the most profound reverence for the wonderful event, which is about to take place.

TE igitur, clementissime Pater, per Jesum Christum Filium tuum, Dominum nostrum, supplices rogamus ac petimus, (Osculatur Altare) uti accepta habeas, et benedicas, haec Ì dona, haec Ì munera, haec Ì sancta sacrificia illibata; in primis quae tibi offerimus pro Ecclesia tua sancta catholica; quam pacificare, custodire, adunare, et regere digneris toto orbe terrarum: una cum famulo tuo Papa nostro Joani Paulo, et Antistite nostro Georgio, et omnibus orthodoxis, atque catholicae et apostolicae fidei cultoribus.

 

 

THEREFORE, most merciful Father, we humbly beg of You and entreat You through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, that Thou would vouchsafe (Kissing the altar) to accept and bless these Ì gifts, these Ì presents, these Ì holy and unspotted Sacrifices which, in the first place we offer Thee for Thy Holy Catholic Church to which vouchsafe to grant peace, as also to preserve, unite, and govern it, throughout the world, together with Thy servant John Paul, our Pope, and George, our Bishop; and all orthodox believers and confessors of the Catholic and Apostolic Faith.

 

Commemoration of the Living

MEMENTO, Domine, famulorum, famularumque tuarum N. et N., et omnium circumstantium, quorum tibi fides cognita est, et nota devotio, pro quibus tibi offerimus: vel qui tibi offerunt hoc sacrificium laudis pro se, suisque omnibus: pro redemptione animarum suarum, pro spe salutis, et incolumitis suae: tibique reddunt vota sua aeterno Deo, vivo et vero.

REMEMBER, O Lord, Thy servants and handmaids N. and N., and all here present, whose faith and devotion are known unto Thee, for whom we offer, or who up to Thee, this sacrifice of praise for themselves, their families and friends, for the redemption of their souls, for the health and salvation they hope for; and who now pay their vows to Thee, the everlasting, living and true God.

Invocation of the Saints

Offering of the Victim to God

The Priest, extends his hands over the Bread (Host) and Wine (Chalice) and the bell is rung.

WE therefore beseech Thee, O Lord, to graciously accept this oblation of our service, as also of Thy entire family; and to dispose our days in Thy peace, preserve us from eternal damnation, and count us in the number in Thine Elect. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

QUAM oblationem tu, Deus, in omnibus, quaesumus, Ì benedictam, Ì adscriptam, Ì ratam, rationabilem, acceptabilemque facere digneris: ut nobis Ì Corpus, et Ì Sanguis fiat dilectissimi Filii tui Domini nostri, Jesu Christi.

WHICH oblation do Thou, O God, vouchsafe in all things to Ì bless, Ì approve, Ì ratify, make worthy and acceptable: that it may become for us the Ì Body, and Ì Blood of Thy most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.
